Segun Sowunmi, chief of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has urged all the Progressive Assembly (APC)-led federal government to abandon any plans to declare a state of emergency in Osun state.
Sowunmi refuted speculation about such a move in his speech on channel TV today.
He said:There are rumors that some companions are cheating on themselves to declare Orson’s state of emergency. What is it and why? (Former President Goodluck) Jonathan also did not declare a state of emergency when he was Governor of Borno when he was Vice President Kashim Shettima, even all of Chibok’s pranks. ”
Naija News Understand these comments follow the phone number of APC State Secretary Partnerships involved On Monday, the federal government imposed emergency rules in Osun due to a local government crisis.
Rejecting the suggestion, Sovenmi insisted that the ruling APC must not try to suppress the opposition’s voices in order to turn Nigeria into a partisan state.
According to Article 305 of the 1999 Constitution, a state of emergency is a situation in which normal constitutional procedures are suspended to restore order in times of danger or disaster in the state. It grants the President the power to implement immediate regulations on public safety.
Osun’s crisis has killed at least six people since Monday after violent clashes between APC and PDP members were linked to control over local government councils.
Ahead of the violence, Oxen Governor Ademola Adeleke raised concerns Sunday, accusing APC members of trying to seize control of the Council Secretariat, supported by security agencies. Adelk, who belongs to the PDP, also urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and warn former governor and current minister Gboyega Oyetola of APC to prevent escalation.
Sowunmi criticized the federal government for failing to take action when Adeleke first issued an alarm, believing that security measures should be taken to prevent bloodshed.
“The governor is screaming and things don’t look normal. Please call Oyetola to order, but the next thing we see is Brigandage. When he raises an alarm, all possible humanitarian possibilities should be used as the chief security officer of the state. Give it to him to prevent this blood,” he said.
He further stressed that the opposition would not tolerate any attempt to curb political diversity.
The PDP Chief said:The President should tell them in clear words that I have not sent anyone who will play God tomorrow on behalf of me, and they don’t know if this will come or it won’t start playing a strong political role. I don’t like people who say this country will be a party because it will never become a party. ”
