    WhatsApp Competition $220 million FCCPC fine, citing operational issues

    • WhatsApp fined $220 million for anti-competitive behavior for WhatsApp competes for FCCPC.

    • The court confirmed the FCCPC’s authority to regulate data privacy and consumer protection.

    • WhatsApp appeals potential service interruptions.

    WhatsApp said its intention was to make the latest judgment on the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, which upheld the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCP) authority to approve anti-competitive conduct by Message Platforms and its parent company, Meta Platforms Inc.

    The court imposed an administrative fine of $220 million on the technology company, and $35,000 to cover the investigation costs.

    The court was chaired by Hon. Thomas Okosun confirmed the authority of the FCCPC by making a decisive ruling on most issues competing by Meta and WhatsApp. Mr. Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of FCCPC, praised the judgment as a major milestone in regulatory progress in Nigeria, praising the skills and dedication of the committee’s legal team.

    WhatsApp stresses that its services both locally and globally are inherently linked to Meta’s infrastructure, noting: “WhatsApp relies on minimal data to run and ensures users are secure. It runs without a Meta infrastructure, whether in Nigeria or around the world.”

    The platform assured users its dedication to continuing operations in Nigeria, but warned that compliance with current FCCPC directives without access to META’s support could significantly disrupt services.
